Outdoor Education

Why outdoor education?

At ISSP, we provide outdoor education to help children:

  • To increase time in natural, challenging environments.
  • To provide opportunities to develop resilience, agency and wellbeing.
  • To promote alternatives to screen time.
  • To increase opportunities to connect to nature.

Our approach

The Outdoor Education Curriculum is focused on character development and split into 3 areas:

Metacognition

The ability to learn from past experiences and adapt them into future actions

Resilience

The ability to cope adaptively and bounce back after changes, challenges

What are we doing?

By partnering with reputable outdoor education providers, we  are enhancing the outdoor education offerings at ISSP to provide more impactful learning experiences for students. Our Cognita Outdoor education curriculum for field trips helps transform classrooms into forests, mountains, and even farms. Students become explorers, and artists, engaging with nature firsthand. They investigate plant life, track animal habitats, and learn about environmental stewardship. These trips foster teamwork, build confidence, and spark curiosity.

Engagement with the Local Community

Our Field trips following the PYP curriculum and local engagements allow students to learn from real-world experiences and bridge the gap between theory and practice. Students interact with community members, gain cultural understanding, and discover ways to contribute meaningfully. These immersive experiences foster civic responsibility and a sense of belonging, leaving a lasting impact on both students and the community.

As part of these partnerships, we’re excited to engage with and support local communities. Together, we’ve developed community projects that offer valuable learning opportunities for our students. By way of example, our inaugural project involved Grades 3 – 5 participating in rice cultivation, where students will learn directly from local farmers, engage in planting and nurturing rice paddies, and eventually utilize the harvested rice within our school community. Through these hands-on experiences, students will not only gain practical skills but also deepen their understanding of environmental stewardship and cultural exchange.
